The origins of National No Bra Day can be found during the year 2011 in Toronto city of Canada. It was around this time, when Dr. Mitchell Brown, a cosmetic surgeon, thought of establishing Bra (Breast Reconstruction Awareness) Day. The purpose was to educate people about mastectomy operations and the options for reconstruction. October 18th was chosen for the celebration and is still acknowledged as a vital day for breast cancer awareness. However, it is speculated that when this festival expanded from Canada to the rest of the world in 2011, it also spawned its sister event: National No Bra Day on October 13th.

National No Bra Day was created in July 2011 by a person going by the alias Anastasia Doughnuts to increase breast cancer awareness, coupled with a website to assist in making the event happen. After the passing of 3 years, the likely celebrating day for the theme was shifted to October 13 which coincides with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
