History of National Wildlife Day

National Wildlife Day which falls on February 22nd and September 4th, was created in 2005 by animal behaviorist and philanthropist Colleen Paige to raise awareness of threatened species that must be protected and saved from extinction each year, in addition to recognizing zoos and exceptional animal-protected areas around the world for every action they take to preserve this planet’s animals and inform the general public regarding conservation – particularly kids since they are the ones who are going to have to take care of the wildlife as conservationists.

National Wildlife Day will be observed on two dates to raise public awareness of the predicament of wild animals worldwide. NWD motivates wildlife enthusiasts to take action and fight for living creatures who need a voice, to attend their local zoo, and to make donations whatever they can to help our lovable animal friends.

This day, which was previously commemorated and observed on September 4th, has been moved to February 22nd to honor the memory and birthday of Steve Irwin, a wildlife conservationist. Steve Irwin is a wildlife conservationist, Australian Zookeeper, and tv presenter known as “The Crocodile Hunter.” The Crocodile Hunter was a wildlife documentary series helmed by Steve Irwin and Terri Irwin.

While filming a wildlife documentary on September 4, 2006, he confronted a stingray, which began stabbing him with its tail. Irwin collapsed within seconds after its tail pierced his heart, causing major bleeding. He was instantaneously transferred to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The universe has lost an outstanding conservationist who dedicated almost his entire life to raising awareness concerning threatened animals and assisting in their sustainability. The day was committed to all of his accomplishments to honor him.

How To Celebrate National Wildlife Day 2023?

  1. Go for a walk!

Those of us who live near the “wildness” that Thoreau described with such clarity must use National Wildlife Day as a source of inspiration to get out there — and to start exploring the wilderness.

  1. Learn about conservation efforts at your local zoo.

Whereas zoos and aquariums have a mixed history, they play a crucial role in the preservation of endangered species throughout the world. Many of these establishments are engaged in rare animal breeding programs, and they also try and educate the public about the significance of wildlife conservation. Pay a visit to your local zoo or aquarium on National Wildlife Day. Alternatively, if there is none nearby, consider going to an online cam!

  1. Contribute to conservation organizations

The majority of what we adore about wildlife and natural habitats will almost certainly disappear eternally if environmental groups did not work hard.

  1. Consider wildlife when shopping.

Are you a conscientious shopper? Do you comprehend why you should avoid palm oil and buy coffee grown in the shade? What about the significance of purchasing recyclable materials? If not, use National Wildlife Day to know and understand more about the impact of your purchasing habits. If you wish to protect the earth, you must be a responsible shopper.

  1. Educate yourself as well as others.

On National Wildlife Day, one of the most important things you can do is start educating yourself and others regarding the significance of conservation. How much do you know about the creatures that live on our planet? Take advantage of this day to gain knowledge about them. Explore a book, observe a nature documentary, or go to a conservation website. And also don’t forget to demonstrate to someone else what you’ve managed to learn!

  1. Clean up this mess!

Several communities have organizations dedicated to cleaning up all of the trash that has been left behind. Discover when and where they’ll be working, and then attend to them in tidying up your neighborhood.

Why National Wildlife Day Is Important?

On occasion, a lot of us are urged to “think outside the box.” Yet how frequently do we admit that “the box” is much more than a thought experiment? It is also physical. We are reminded to go outdoors by nature and wildlife. Because they serve as a constant reminder that each of us must strike the proper balance between our needs and those of the environment we live in, wild animals and the surroundings in which they thrive are the very things that make us admire them. The overwhelming number of threatened species and habitats is brought to our attention by National Wildlife Day, which motivates us to support preservation and conservation initiatives.
